"Lettre De Marque" or Letter of Marque were basically a government license that authorized a private person, known as a "Privateer" to attack and capture vessels of a foreign state at war with the issuer allowing for "legal" piracy throughout the seas, in this case France. The Pirate signature on the back of the guitar is Moise Vauquelin who was based out of Tortuga. A portion of an original "Lettre De Marque" is reproduced here as well in the original French. We are always inspired by Pirates (not the Disneyland kind) and this guitar represents a moment in time that continues to reflect that history. The French on the face of the guitar translates to, "We sail under the Black Flag and the sea will be our empire"
